Because the cathedral is the Bishop's church, it is symbolically the heart of the Diocese. Its name comes from the Latin cathedra, or "chair". The Bishop's chair, symbol of his authority in the Diocese, is located within the church. As a particular city is the seat of a county because of its significant role in that county, the cathedral is the seat of the Diocese.
